Photo Restoration

You Live Your Life, We'll Chronicle it Creatively

Marsha, owner of Leave A Legacy as a guest on Tom Martino on May 4, 2010. Here, Tom and Marsha show examples of the types of media that they  can work with at Leave A Legacy. They give ideas of different things that can be created from various old media (and new media for that matter). A video clip of an 8mm film transfer is shown. Several examples of graduation projects are shown including a photo mosaic, chocolate bar invitations, DVD slideshow and video montage, photo paper fans and a school days book.

a mug showing a cow stuck in the mud

fond memories of the cows

A recent client asked us to create a one of the kind mug for him to give to his father for a gift. Taking 2 photos of his dad pulling a cow out of the mud hole that it was stuck in and adding the requested text. The story behind the sentiment is that his father has recently sold his herd and this image will remind him of difficult times with the cows.

floppy disks

memories trapped on floppies and zip disks

Another type of media that we can convert for you is floppy disks and zip disks.  Though they are rather obscure today we can certainly do this digital transfer as well.  The files that clients typically want captured from these disks are photo files.  Recent client Eva brought in a record breaking 60 floppy disks and not so record breaking 4 zip disks. From these we captured 239 photos. She wants to use these long lost images to create several versions of a photobook about her late husband. Today we printed out some sheets with a small version of each image arranged with 16/page and with dates and titles so that she could work on arranging them at home.

Some time ago my mother gave me one of my great grand mother’s receipt books from managing the family farm. It is a long and narrow ruled book where she logged all of farm expenses and income.  This book was for 1942.

My mother asked me to scan a few pages of her receipt book.  I didn’t scan a few pages I scanned the entire ledger including the pages that were oversized and the ones that were “stapled” with a straight pin.

Receipt book

cover & 2 pages

At Leave A Legacy we scanned each page and saved them as individual jpg files (just like the files from a digital camera). Then we resized each page so that they would fit on an 8.5″ x 11″ page. We printed them in color and two sided and trimmed off the excess. We then used some 11″ steel spines to bind it with clear covers.

One of the pages shows the money that was paid to the hired hand Wendell.  That hired hand married one of their daughters…he is my grandpa.  He ended up getting the whole farm for himself eventually.

In our family it’s always the oldest of the oldest that gets all of the family memorabilia passed on to them.  That means that several family members, me included, are left out.  With Leave A Legacy in Fort Collins and Denver on your side everyone in the family can have a copy.

What unique family memorabilia to you have that needs to be preserved and duplicated?  Leave A Legacy can scan almost anything….see if you can stump us!

We enjoyed the opportunity to work on a special project for the Mosaic organization of Fort Collins.  They asked us to use photos from the 1980’s, 1990’s, 2000’s and of their volunteers and make some collage posters for their big fundraiser and ultimately to put in their office. Mosaic logo Loreili brought in folders containing the photos for the different posters. We looked on their website  http://www.mosaicinfo.org

for how we should crop and recolor the photos. We rounded the corners on all the photos and made the images either blue toned or orange toned (like their logo) The final project was 4 posters which were 24″ x 36″ in size. They were elated with the outcome and so were we. We didn’t post the images of the actual posters to maintain the privacy of those they serve.

More about Mosaic’s mission: Mosaic is a faith-based organization serving people with intellectual disabilities. We believe that every individual is a person of worth. Together Mosaic staff members, volunteers and the people we support work as partners.
