International Video Tape to DVD

by Marsha Knackstedt / Tuesday, 29 May 2012 / Published in Leave A Legacy, Tips About Audio, Video and Film

Video tapes from many countries other than the USA are in a different format. Video tapes in the USA and (see list below) are formatted as NTSC while video tapes in other countries are PAL (see list below). Leave A Legacy can transfer your VHS and VHSC –PAL video tapes to DVD for you. We can create either PAL or a NTSC formatted DVDs. The NTSC disks will actually play on 95% of the world’s DVD players.  If you have other types of video tapes (other than VHS and VHSC) then we will need your foreign format camera in order to do the transfer for you.

It is not uncommon for a client to purchase a VHS tape from England or Australia and surprised that it won’t work in their player. Just because they speak English doesn’t mean that they are the same format.

How we do it at Leave A Legacy: we have a VHS player that plays PAL formatted video tapes and we also have a TV that shows both PAL and NTSC.

NTSC is the video system or standard used in North America and most of South America. In NTSC, 30 frames are transmitted each second. Each frame is made up of 525 individual scan lines. List of countries using NTSC:
