Due to the long exposure times of Victorian photography, the mothers of children getting a portrait done would be camouflaged into the scenery.

Back in those days, photography wasn’t a snap. It took minutes to create one single photograph. That’s why people never smiled! It took too long for the exposure and the smile would look forced on insincere.

When it came to photos of just children, in order to keep them still, the mother would have to be disguised into the background or even as a chair to keep the children still.
